Protection for the life behind the mortgage
A home is only half the story. The other half is the family living in it, the income paying for it and the things you could not easily replace. That is what protection advice is for.
The cover we advise on
Four kinds of protection, one plain-English explanation of each. We help you work out what fits, and just as importantly, what you can leave out.
Life insurance
Pays out a lump sum or an income if you die during the term. Most people use it to clear the mortgage and leave their family secure in the home.
Worth a conversation if anyone relies on your income.
Critical illness cover
Pays a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious illness the policy covers. It buys breathing room: bills paid, mortgage covered, time to recover.
Worth a conversation if an illness would put your home at risk.
Income protection
Replaces part of your income if illness or injury stops you working, for as long as the policy allows. Rent, mortgage and groceries do not pause when you do.
Worth a conversation if your household runs on your salary.
Home insurance
Buildings and contents cover for the place itself: the bricks, the roof and everything you would have to buy again. We help you get the sums insured right.
Worth a conversation for every homeowner, and most renters too.
Three questions worth sitting with
Protection stops being abstract the moment you try it on your own household. Nobody asks these questions to sell you something; they are the questions the advice is built from.
Could you pay the bills on no income?
If your pay stopped tomorrow, the mortgage, the heating and the food shop would not stop with it. Count the months your savings would carry the house. For most households it is a smaller number than they expected.
How long would sick pay really last?
Statutory sick pay is a set weekly amount that runs for a limited number of weeks, and it sits far below most salaries. Employer schemes vary, and many step down to that floor sooner than people assume. The gap between the two is what cover is for.
Could you sustain a long recovery?
A critical illness like cancer can mean many months out of work, sometimes longer. Treatment is hard enough without the mortgage adding pressure. The right cover exists so that time can go on getting better, not staying afloat.
None of this is about selling policies. It is about making sure the right financial outcome is there for when you need it most, with exactly the cover your situation calls for and nothing you do not need.
Cover that fits, not cover that sells
Protection is personal. The right answer depends on your family, your work, your health and your budget, which is why we start by listening rather than quoting.
You will always hear what a policy does not cover as clearly as what it does. If something is not worth paying for in your situation, we will say so.
